On 16th January 1933 a French aviator – Jean Mermoz flew over the Atlantic Ocean (from Senegal to Brazil). Mermoz along with his crew spent above water about 17,5 hours. Jean Mermoz died as a pilot in 1936 in unexplained circumstances.

On 13th January 1945 Japanese kamikaze pilot damaged American escort carrier USS Salamaua. It was the last kamikaze success on waters surrounding the Philippines. Despite serious damages (runway, airshed, drive, rudder) the USS Salamaua was provisorily repaired and reached San Francisco. On 21st April the repair of the ship was finished.

On 11th January 1975 was launched Soyuz 17 spacecraft, with Aleksiej Gubariew i Gieorgij Grieczkin on board. The Soviet astronauts on Salut 4 space station carried out a series of experiments. They spent 29 days, 13 hours, 19 minutes and 45 seconds on the orbit.
