Today in aviation history – 29th September

On 29th September 1918 died an American fighter ace Frank Luke. He managed to gain 18 aerial victories and is the second best American World War I ace. On 29th September he downed three aircrafts, but due to the engine damaged he was forced to land on German territory. He didn’t want to be taken prisoner, so he started an uneven fight with German soldiers. He died from a gun wound.
