Today in aviation history – 2nd June

On 2nd June 1794 for the first time hot air balloon was used for military purposes. The authors of this flight were two Frenchmen, Jean Marie Joseph Coutelle and Nicolas Jacques Conté. They served in Aerostiers, French corps created for reconnaissance purposes. Aerosters used hot air balloons in order to monitor positions of hostile armies. Corps was created in 1794 and operated for 5 years.
