On 22nd May 2002 was made a test flight of a fighter drone Boeing X-45. It was an American construction. Its production was connected with drone programme called UCAV (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle). The Boeing Company was one of the main participants of this project.
On 21st May 1941 a German fighter aviation regiment Luftlandesturmregiment took over the airport Maleme in north-western Crete. No. 5 mountain division was transported to the airport. Luftlandesturmregiment was basically glider foot-slodiers, but as a part of this task most of the soldiers parachuted.
On 20th May 1927 Charles Lindberd flew from Garden City, New York to Paris. The flight took 33,5 hours. His plane Spirit of St. Louis is now in National Air and Space Museum.
On 19th May 1966 was made a test flight of SZD-30 Pirat. It was a Polish training and stunt glider. The glider was constructed by Jerzy Śmielkiewicz. In January 1978 was made a test flight of new version of the glider – SZD-30C.
On 18th May 1917 an American pilot Kiffin Rockwell downed a German aircraft. It was a first aerial victory of Lafayette escadrille – an aerial division fighting along with French army, consisted mainly of American volunteers.
On 17th May 1968 took place a crash of a training aircraft TS-8 Bies. The aircraft hooked the trees and the airscrew was damaged. Sub-colonel Marian Chrzan had general injuries, but major Ireneusz Ryndak fell out of cockpit and died due to head injury.
