On 21st July 1949 American aviation carried out training that showed how dangerous aviation is for big ships. NBS-1 bombers using two thousand pound (907 kg) bombs sunk German liner Ostfriesland (taken by the Americans after World War I). The training was ordered by aviation theoretitian general Billy Mitchell.

On 19th July 1918 captain George Edward Henry McIrish McElroy downed 44th aircraft. This Irish aviator was born on 14th May 1893. Altogether he gained 47 aerial victories. He died on 31st July 1918, downed by antiaircraft artillery.

Today in aviation history – 18th July

On 18th July 1942 was made a first flight of a German fighter Me-262 with jet engines. It was flown by Fritz Wendel. Because of Hitler’s postulate and lack of metals, the mass production started in 1944. Out of 1400 aircrafts only 300 of them were entered into service.

On 16th July 1936 during a plane crash of RWD-9 (No. 263 SP-DRC) died general Gustaw Orlicz-Dreszer – an Aerial Defense Inspector. On board of the plane were also sublieutanant Stefan Loth and captain Aleksander Łągiewski.
