Another record in cargo traffic at Chopin Airport

In 2015 cargo traffic at Chopin Airport was up by 9%. The Warsaw airport handled a total of 58,284 tonnes of freight in the twelve months of 2015, including 57,735 tonnes internationally (9.4%) and 548 tonnes domestically (-20.3%). Imports exceeded exports, with 32,440 tonnes and 25,844 tonnes respectively.

The biggest cargo carriers were LOT Polish Airlines (21,000 t), UPS Airlines (9,500 t) European Air Transport (8,200 t), Emirates (6,100 t), and TNT Airways (3,000 t).

“In terms of cargo traffic year 2015 was highly successful. Chopin Airport has remained a leader in the Polish freight traffic for many years. Forecasts for this year also indicate that the demand for goods transported by air, to and from our part of Europe, will raise. We are talking to other cargo carriers who also show interest in opening regular services from Warsaw. We see a large potential for growth of this market segment and want to develop it further – says Andrzej Ilków, Chopin Airport deputy director and security affairs director.

Air mail saw a slight fall (down 7.4%), reaching 14,100 tonnes. Domestic freight stood at 1,500 tonnes, while the figure for international traffic increased by nearly 2,2% to 12,500 tonnes. Exports continued to exceed imports, with 7,400 tonnes and 5,900 tonnes respectively.

The biggest quantities of air mail goes to Frankfurt, London, Paris, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. The biggest increase in volumes of the sent mail reached Paris (39.5%), whereas London dropped by 12.1%.

The Warsaw airport handles more than 70% of cargo traffic in Poland. The most frequently carried goods include: consumable parts and materials for heavy industry, pharmaceuticals, books and newspapers.
