Today in aviation history – 27th September

On 27th September 1894 was born a German aviator, fighter ace from World War I period – Lothar Freiherr von Richthofen. Richthofen served in elite fighting squadron Jagdstaffel 11 commanded by his brother Manfred who used to be called Red Baron. During war he managed to gain 40 aerial victories. After World War I was involved in civilian aviation. He died in a plane crash on 4th July 1922 when piloting a passenger plane (flight nr D1481) from Berlin to Hamburg. The crash was caused by engine malfunction near Fuhlsbüttel.
