Today in aviation history – 17th September

On 17th September 1916 German fighter pilot – Manfred von Richthofen gained his first aerial victory. After nearly a month he downed 5 hostile aircrafts. On 21st April 1918 during a fight with Canadian pilots, he was downed from the ground. On the day of his death Richthofen had 80 aerial victories which makes him the most successful fighting ace of the World War I.
