Today in aviation history – 15th August

On 15th August 1896 was born major Józef Łęgowski. As an officer of cavalry he fought in the Polish-Soviet War. In 1926 he passed the pilot’s course. Since 1938 he was a commander of pilots’ school in Masłowo. In 1939 he was captured by Soviet soldiers. On 4th April 1940 he was transported to Katyn, and killed by NKVD. Łęgowski was ordered with silver War Order of Virtuti Militari, two Crosses of Valour and Cross of Independence.
