Today in aviation history – 1st April

On 1st April 1918 in Great Britain by merging the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service was established the Royal Air Force. It was the first air force in the world independent from the command of land army and navy. RAF was reporting directly to aviation ministry. One of their (along with allies) biggest successes was stopping German raids on Great Britain during II World War (the Battle of Britain in 1940).
