Today in aviation history – 17th Decmber

On 17th December 1903 the Wright brothers made few test flights of their flying machine. The first flight lasted 12 s and covered a distance of 39 m, but the fourth one lasted almost 1 minute and covered a distance of 279 m. It is claimed to be the date of a first flight of a machine equipped with engine. Other sources claim that the first flight of a flying machine powered by engine occurred 3 days earlier when Wilbur Wright made a test flight of another aircraft but unfortunately the airplane ended up with slight damages.
