The air show, which has just celebrated its 22nd year, made it through to the finals of the Essex Tourism and Hospitality Awards, and its success was announced at a five star awards ceremony last night.
It was one of three competing for the honours in the Best Event or Festival category, having been shortlisted from a large number of nominations.
Clacton Air Show’s rivals on the night were Street Diversions, Chelmsford City Events and Fright Night, Hylands House, Chelmsford.
The awards are staged to celebrate excellence in Tourism and hospitality right across the county and aim to promote and reward leading players in the industry, whatever their sector or size.
It was the first time that Clacton Air Show had been entered into the awards.
Alan Goggin, Tendring District Council’s (TDC) Cabinet Member for Tourism, attended the ceremony at Boreham House, Chelmsford, with his wife Mary.
“What an accolade for the air show and the team at the Council that runs it – simply the best in Essex,” he said.
“It was a glittering night and I was so proud to be able to accept the award on behalf of all those who are involved in the run up to the show and the two days it takes place.
“It may only be a two-day event but it is a year in the making!
“Clacton Air Show is a free event which is put on at virtually no cost to the tax payer and we had around 140,000 people attend this year.
“I know it’s the best – but it is fantastic to have that fact recognised by others in this way by winning this prestigious award.”
Cllr Goggin said that the 2013 air show was one of the biggest and best yet with the Red Arrows displaying on both days and the Vulcan also putting in an appearance.
Now the team is busy preparing for 2014 to ensure that the show maintains the very high standards that it has set itself.
TDC Leader Peter Halliday added: “Tourism really is on the up in Tendring and the Clacton Air Show plays a significant part in that. This award is thoroughly deserved.”
Clacton Air Show will now go forward to represent Essex in the national 2014 Visit England Awards for Excellence.
The awards are organised by the Essex Chronicle Media Group in association with Visit Essex.
