JetBlue Makes Detroit its 85th BlueCity With New Service To Boston’s Logan Airport

JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU) today announced that Detroit will become its 85th destination in the Americas, with new nonstop flights to Boston Logan Airport beginning March 10, 2014. Detroit becomes JetBlue’s 51st nonstop destination from Boston and the newest business market served.

JetBlue will serve the Boston-Detroit route three times daily, operated with its 100-seat Embraer 190 aircraft. From now through October 17, 2013, flights from Boston to Detroit are out for sale from $85 one way (a) for travel March 10, 2014 to May 22, 2014 (blackout dates April 17-28). JetBlue serves 22 of the top 25 destinations where Bostonians travel.

„This is a great day for Detroit, as we bring new competitive fares and award-winning service to the Motor City,” said JetBlue CEO Dave Barger, a Detroit native. „We wanted to bring more competition to the Boston-Detroit market, adding to the great baseball series between the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox, and last night’s Detroit-Boston NHL game.”

„This route is an important addition not only to Boston business travelers, but also to international passengers connecting in Boston on our alliance partner Emirates,” said JetBlue vice president network planning Scott Laurence. JetBlue partner Emirates will begin operating Dubai-Boston nonstop the same day as JetBlue’s launch.

„JetBlue’s sleek, comfortable jets will feel right at home pulling-up to our bright blue jet bridges at Detroit Metro Airport’s new North Terminal,” said Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Tom Naughton. „We’re excited to welcome JetBlue to Detroit and to offer customers a new option not only to Boston, but to the Middle East and India via Emirates.”

JetBlue has been cited by an independent study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the airline that lowers fares the most when it begins service in a new market, as measured by fares during the 2007-2012 timeframe. JetBlue, MIT says, lowers fares $32 one way on average, or $64 on a roundtrip fare.

From Detroit, Boston is a top destination and the second-biggest market without low-fare service. The two cities have strong ties primarily in the academic and research and development sectors. Detroit is also home to the largest Arab-American community and a sizeable Indian population, making JetBlue’s partnership with Emirates particularly valuable to Detroit travelers.

„JetBlue offers passengers outstanding service and great fares and we congratulate them on launching their 51st nonstop destination from Boston Logan and their continued growth at the airport,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. „When JetBlue started here in 2004, they had 30 employees based in Boston; today they have more than 2,500.”
