Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower engine successfully powered Bombardier’s new CSeries* airplane for its maiden flight on Monday. The PW1500G engine, which achieved engine certification from Transport Canada in February, is the first of six new engine programs using Pratt & Whitney’s Geared Turbofan™ architecture to power an aircraft.
Coverage of the first flight – with engine-related quotes and comments highlighted – is linked below:

- • Quiet CSeries jet gets a roar of approval (Canadian Press)
- „I think it will get even more competitive as people have seen across the world that there is an aircraft and it’s an aircraft that is fulfilling its mission which is to be a game-changer in terms of the engine,” [Mike Arcamone] told reporters. The Pratt & Whitney engine promises to be quieter and help it to deliver fuel cost savings.”
- • CSeries first flight: Never mind the jet, check out the engines (Crikey)
- „The first flight of Bombardier’s all new regional jet the CSeries 100 at Mirabel outside Montreal overnight also debuted a revolutionary geared turbo fan engine that promises to slash emissions and noise more than conventional powerplants.”

- „You could hardly hear the take-off,” said Martin Gauss, chief executive officer of Latvian carrier AirBaltic, which has ordered 10 of the larger CS300 planes, which seat 130 passengers. „This was one of the reasons why we bought it, along with the cost savings from lower fuel burn.”
- • Bombardier CSeries Jet Completes First Flight as Delays End(Bloomberg)
- „The CSeries will cost about 15 percent less to operate, burn about 20 percent less fuel and be about four times quieter than existing rivals, according to Bombardier. The plane will feature composite materials and the new geared turbofan engine from United Technologies Corp.’s Pratt & Whitney.”

- „Dewar joked that because the flight took off a few minutes earlier than announced and the engines were so quiet, people who happened to be looking in another direction didn’t know the jet was even taking off.”

- „Takeoff of the Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared-turbofan-powered aircraft from runway 06 was extraordinarily quiet.”
- • Reactions to CSeries First Flight (AirInsight)
- The PW1500G engines may inadvertently be the star of the show, as other aspects of the CSeries are not as visible to the audience as the noise level. Clearly, the GTF is a game changer in terms of noise. And with that low noise level, the CS100 is a game changer for performance.
