Cubic Defense Applications, the defense systems business of Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB), has been awarded a contract with a potential value of $18.7 million to develop Navy Communications Data Link Subsystem (CDLS) and other communications technology.
Under contract to the Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR), Cubic will deliver one Communications Data Link Subsystem (CDLS) as well as upgraded KI-11A security subsystems by February 2014 for deployment aboard an aircraft carrier that will have multiple data links supporting helicopters in performing anti-submarine warfare missions. Cubic’s initial funding from SPAWAR will be $8.7 million.
CDLS will enable helicopters to perform multiple simultaneous missions in support of anti-submarine warfare and other planned operations, which will greatly improve the anti-submarine warfare capability of the battle group.
“Cubic is very sensitive to the fact that the Communications Data Link Subsystem is a critical enabler and a significant component in the deployed Navy’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance communications network. Our team worked diligently with SPAWAR to bring this to fruition within the confines of the budget and we look forward to working on enhancing and upgrading the existing capability as soon as possible,” said Rob Janssen, director of Military Programs for Cubic Defense Applications.
Since receiving its first contract in 2003, Cubic has delivered 20 of these advanced communications systems to the Navy, 13 of which are deployed aboard Navy vessels. Each system includes an extremely high-speed wideband data link featuring advanced software-programmable radios, an antenna and secure data link technology. Manufactured in San Diego, the systems were the Navy’s first to include interfaces enabling network-centric warfare. They use multiple waveforms to transmit signal and imagery intelligence data between reconnaissance aircraft sensors and associated surface ship processing systems in near real time to ensure quick and secure distribution of critical intelligence information to the fleet.
